We analysed the 2022/23 season in the top 6 European leagues to put together a set of the key card betting statistics to keep in mind. In this season, the average number of yellow cards shown in a match was 4.0. Moreover, we witnessed one red card in every 5 matches on average. Employing a simple system of one card point for each yellow card and two card points for every red card, the average card points per match added up to 4.4.Therefore, in under over betting, you would most frequently observe 4.5 card points as the threshold: in other words, during an “average” match in these leagues, there was roughly 50-50% chance that there would be under 4.5 card points or over 4.5 card points.
The average number of cards shown in a match showed a good deal of variation across the leagues analysed. English Premier League and French Ligue 1 came across as the most conformist leagues with less than 4 card points per match whereas the Spanish La Liga was the most aggressive league with 5.5 card points per match – including the two red cards shown in every five matches. Nevertheless, we need to note that an “average” match does not really exist in soccer and the card counts can vary significantly from one match to another.
In these 6 leagues, the number of card points typically varied between 1.5 and 3.5. Therefore, the threshold set in under over card betting could be 2.5 points (maybe even, 3.5 points) for the more aggressive teams and 1.5 points for more conformist teams. Moreover, we note that over 0.5 cards (for a specific team) and both teams will receive a card are increasingly popular card bets, especially for the matches when no/low aggression expected.
